Is Mark Zuckerberg in Taiwan? If the Facebook “Places” feature was available here, maybe we'd know for sure.
The Internet was abuzz yesterday with rumors of local sightings of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who many netizens allege is currently on a low-profile visit to the nation.
On the Mobile01 Internet forum, a commenter with the username “seattleincredibo” claimed to come face to face with the world youngest billionaire Thursday afternoon in the lobby of the Taipei Hilton hotel, watching as he and three friends left through the side door.
“O.M.G. We just saw Mark Zuckerberg at Snake Alley. Walking with his gf and 2 bodyguards. We were so shocked we only got his back,” posted “Yupkigirl,” a self-professed Asian journalist/pop culture sociologist on Twitter, the microblogging website, late Thursday. The tweet has also been reposted on the website, Justspotted.com.
Snake Alley is a Taipei City night market on Huashi Street. The “girlfriend” mentioned in Yupkigirl's tweet is likely Priscilla Chan, the Chinese-American Harvard College alumna Zuckerberg has reportedly been dating for years.
Iris, a Hilton hotel PR spokesperson, said she “did not know” if Zuckerberg was staying at the hotel, adding that such information was not made available for “private visits.” She would neither confirm nor deny whether Zuckerberg was in the country, repeating quickly and firmly, “We really don't know.”
On Mobile01, Seattleincredibo described Zuckerberg as donning “American, college-kid clothes,” and pinned his height at somewhere between 165 and 170 centimeters.
Local media shared the purported link to the picture of Zuckerberg and his friends (http://twitpic.com/3lccjq/full). The couple in the image does appear to closely resemble Zuckerberg and Chan.
While Zuckerberg's presence in the country remains undetermined, netizens are running amok with rumors that he is here for the New Year countdown and will watch the Taipei 101 fireworks show.
Other commenters are using the opportunity to tell the creator of their social networking site that they are not fond of the new Facebook profile redesign.
In related news, figures released by the online competitive intelligence service Experian Hitwise lists Facebook.com as the most visited website in the U.S., surpassing its rival and runners-up, Google.com.
